The Action genre

 What Makes Action, Action?

Action is a film genre known for heavily fast paced scenes, explosions and fighting. It's also mixed with a lot of special effects and stunt takes to create a more realistic plot.

The target audience of action movies are usually males who are aged 16 to 25 years old. This is the target audience because of the violence, sexual content and editing that is known to attract younger males. Men are used more widely among the action world and have a  "stronger" character concept.Very little women play major roles in action films which can drive women away from being so engaged in the genre.

One convention widely used in action is the usage of the villain vs. hero analogy. The hero in the movie is usually the main character and has a desire to keep the town safe and help the victims. The villain is always plotting against the hero and they are known to be enemies. Throughout the movies they engage in scenes that have the audience practically off their seats. At the end of the movie the hero usually defeats the villain.

Action films are known to be filmed in larger, well known cities. They are filmed in cities like New York City, Los Angeles and London. They do this to catch the attention of their audience with places they already know and love.

Action movies are marketed with the fastest scenes with the highest levels of special effects. They market the most intense scenes to immediately catch the viewer's eye so that they will watch the movie to lead up to those scenes. They place the most famous actors that are used in the film through marketing. The cover is usually dramatic and bold as shown below. The trailers are usually played on mens TV stations such as sports stations.

The Hunger Games

One example of a movie that accurately represents the action genre is the Hunger Games. The main character is Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence). It's set in North America where they are 12 districts owned by the Capitol of Panem. They created an event that is going to be shown through television where citizens watch their peers fight for survival. The movie is filled with extreme scenes of violence of the "players" killing each other. There's high speed shots of them running through the forest and starving. They are put through high pressure situation throughout the movie.

Ocean Eight

Oceans Eight is starred by Sandra Bullock playing Debbie Ocean. She spends 5 years creating the most detail oriented heist possible. She creates a star team to complete the goal of stealing a necklace. There's a high speed scene of the team being chased by the cops and their way of hiding.
